Lakme (1976) Rent Video (48 hours) Lakme (1976)

In 1976, Lakmé was little known in Australia. Léo Delibes’ lush opera about a Hindu priest’s daughter and a British army officer falling dangerously in love was a favourite of opera fans, but the general public knew little about it.

That changed with this landmark production starring Dame Joan Sutherland in the title role. Directed by Norman Ayrton and with vividly colourful designs by Desmond Digby, this is a stunning vision of a romantic tragedy in India under British colonial rule. When it was broadcast on ABC TV, the opera gained a whole new set of fans.

Sutherland soars through the extraordinary vocal demands of this brilliant role, including in the unforgettable Flower Duet and coloratura showpiece Bell Song. She’s conducted by Richard Bonynge and joined by a cast that includes Henri Wilden, Clifford Grant, Isobel Buchanan, John Pringle and Huguette Tourangeau.

Note: This production was filmed in 1976 and reflects the theatrical practices of the time.
